Karbon yang diperoleh berasal dari sisa limbah pertanian seperti tempurung kelapa, cangkang kelapa sawit, jerami padi, sekam padi dan lain-lain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tempurung kelapa, cangkang kelapa sawit, jerami padi dan\nsekam padi merupakan biomassa yang sangat potensial untuk dijadikan sebagai\nsumber karbon (biochar) dalam meningkatkan kesuburan tanah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pengertian Biochar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unido.or.jp\/en\/technology_db\/5250\/\">Biochar<\/a> adalah bahan padat yang kaya dengan unsur karbon dari hasil konversi limbah organik (biomas pertanian) melalui proses pembakaran tidak sempurna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pembakaran tidak sempurna adalah proses pembakaran dengan suplai oksigen yang terbatas atau sering disebut sebagai pirolisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pembakaran tidak sempurna dapat dilakukan menggunakan alat Tanur dengan suhu berkisar 250-350<sup>o<\/sup>C selama 1-3,5 jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sumber Bahan Baku Biochar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bahan baku terbaik yang dapat dijadikan sebagai biochar adalah limbah organik secara khusus yaitu limbah pertanian dan perkebunan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Limbah sisa pertanian dan perkebunan tersebut merupakan limbah yang sulit terdekomposisi atau terurai atau rasio C\/N tinggi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bahan baku yang umum digunakan sebagai sumber biochar adalah sekam padi dengan proporsi 16-28% dari jumlah gabah kering; tempurung kelapa dengan proporsi 15-19% dari jumlah buah kelapa; tempurung kelapa sawit dengan proporsi 6,4% dari produksi TBS; dan tongkol jagung 21% dari bobot tongkol kering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jumlah biomasa pertanian dan potensi sebagai bahan baku biochar dapat dilihat pada Tabel berikut: (2015)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fungsi Biochar untuk Meningkatkan Kesuburan Tanah <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beberapa penelitian membuktikan bahwa biochar memiliki manfaat yang luar biasa tanah dan mampu memulihkan kualitas tanah yang terdegradasi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fungsi biochar adalah untuk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Meningkatkan ketersediaan unsur hara di dalam tanah<\/li><li>Menahan hara agar tidak mudah tercuci atau menguap<\/li><li>Melindungi tanah dari erosi oleh tetes air hujan<\/li><li>Meningkatkan pH dan KTK pada lahan kering dan bersifat masam<\/li><li>Membantu untuk merangsang perkembangan mikroorganisme simbiotik seperti mikoriza, karena mampu menahan air dan udara serta menciptakan lingkungan yang bersifat netral khususnya bagi tanah yang bersifat masam.<\/li><li>Dapat meningkatkan produksi tanaman.<\/li><li>Mengurangi laju emisi CO2 dan mengakumulasi karbon dalam jumlah yang  cukup besar sehingga sangat baik diaplikasikan pada lahan berpasir. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Biochar juga mampu bertahan lama di tanah yaitu hingga lebih dari 400 tahun karena sulit terdekomposisi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Karakteristik Biochar yang Bagus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebagai bahan pembenah tanah, biochar yang akan digunakan harus memiliki karakteristik yang sesuai agar fungsinya dapat berjalan maksimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adapun karakteristik yang harus diperhatikan adalah:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>pH<\/li><li>Kemampuan menahan air<\/li><li>Kandungan C-Organik<\/li><li>Kapasitas Tukar Kation (KTK)<\/li><li>Kandungan unsur hara <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Karakter dan kualitas biochar yang digunakan bergantung dari\nsumber bahan baku dan proses
